Overall Comments

A highly effective conclusion to the making of visual work for this course. It is probably the most coherent and complete work, both visually and critically that you’ve produced at the OCA thus far. An exemplar of how to approach the themes of this course in a creative and contemporarily insightful manner.

Feedback on assignment

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity

You have refined your approach from Assignment 4 such that Assignment 4 now has the correct perspective in relation to Assignment 5.

I’m not going to pick apart the accompanying text as I find nothing in there to cavil about. Its arguments are connected, well referenced and convincing.

What concerns me more is how the final presentation of the visual material will work. Perusing the work on the blog I simply wanted to see it larger. I felt deprived. It’s as if their function is to be illustrations accompanying your text rather than the essay supporting the visual experience. The images being taken as read rather than allowing the audience to experience them and make their own critical adjustments to the narrative you propose.

As seen on the blog the upward scrolling video was a good idea but the jerkiness distracting. Also it would perhaps hold the attention more with some sound added, perhaps you reading from your essay quietly in the background. Again making it into an experience rather than a shorthand reference supporting the text. Of course the Instagram context is important for one version of how its represented but I think there should be some accommodation with creating spectacle, as in how your simulation of the Prince exhibition would look in real life, the scale creating sepctacle. Much more visually engaging than a small square up of the simulation.

I should like to be standing in the gallery looking at them on the walls or in another format as a full screen video presentation and it’s a frustration not to be, a frustration that serves no purpose. Even in the multi layered world of meanings that you’ve created in all your levels of subversion, from the initial filters to the ways you’ve chosen to posit presenting your visual interventions.

The overall effect is of the physical scientist who can’t absent himself from the results of his experiment, you can’t set yourself outside your frame of reference, ‘replaced by colorful and banal carousel of unimportant miniatures in front of which the viewer will stop amused or scandalized’

‘banal carousel of unimportant miniatures’, but are they, this seems to imply a de facto hierarchy with Sanders’ images laid low by the entertaining interventions of low brow culture rather than a valid repurposing addressing contemporary cultural values and needs.

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity

As usual, very carefully executed coursework that feels creatively and technically
developmental rather than something to be got through.

Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis

The research you assembled to support your essay argument was appropriate and
effective in that regard.

The log is easy to navigate with appropriate menu items. There is interesting varied  content under the Reflections menu item but it needs self-reflective posts about how you are currently relating to your own work and tutor feedback.

Pointers for the next assignment

The final assignment is preparation for assessment. As you will be aware the form that assessment is going to take in the future is very fluid. However resources are being put in place to aid students in preparing for future assessments and I think it’s a good idea to avail yourself of these even though you won’t be assessed in the coming summer assessment.

The formal document which sets out the process…

Dan, the acting leader for photography, has arranged a Zoom meeting for students to
be advised in, details here…

https://discuss.oca-student.com/t/photography-specificadaptations-to-covid-19/11641/47?u=clivew …..students submitting for November assessment are also welcome and I recommend that you attend if you can.

There is also a padlet which is being added to as new information becomes available…

• Conceptual progression
• Supported by research

Areas for development

• Consider a more arresting presentation of the visual work
• Reflecting on own progression and tutor reports
